“I can’t pretend I don’t have some rotting branches; we can’t pretend our privileges don’t exist just because we do not like them.   To relinquish the power they hold, we have to constantly expose them for what they are,” Grandma Willow concluded, and gave John a pat on the back with one of her drooping branches.

I know we use the word “privilege” a lot in the community when we refer to certain opportunities and advantages we have that other people don’t. There are many types of privilege: white privilege, male privilege, able-bodied privilege, etc. When we say “check your privilege,” we’re not asking you to feel ashamed of your advantages, but to be aware of them. Awareness is the first step to making change, and we can use our awareness of our privileges to ensure that other communities and other individuals will have access to these opportunities. So check your privilege, spread awareness, and make change!
